Full Version: Question: what size fuel cell do you use?

My 10 gal ATL fuel cell was delivered, of course there's a ton of room in the front trunk, but if I used an 8-gallon tank, it would fit more snugly into the well. The 10-gal will require more fabrication time on the straps to get it to seat properly. So wondering if I should trade in for an 8-gallon.

Question, was size do you use?

Tnx,

What is the primary use of the car? Autocross, Time Trial, DE? With out knowing how long your planned sessions are, fuel consumption, if you are running a surge tank in the cell, how often you want to fill it up, etc. it is impossible to say how much capacity you need. I know my twin carbed 2056cc race motor got ~3mpg under track/ax usage and 16-18mpg on the freeway. For a 12 run PCA autocross I would have 25 miles freeway (round trip), ~12 miles of AX laps, a bit of idling in grid and would go through 6-7 gallons. I had the stock tank so I would leave the house with it showing full on the gauge, though this was probably a couple gallons short of the full 16 and would arrive back home with ~1/4 tank showing.

My 8 gal is just right for DE and 30 min. races with SCCA in ITE.

I have a 2.4 L Type 4 with 44 IDF carbs. I use about 6 gal. for each 30 - 35 min. event.

I have installed a 2.5 L Subaru turbo and may now be a little short, but, I am hoping
that the EFI will use less fuel than the 44 IDFs
brant
15 gallon (enduro)
but I only go out with 4.5 gallons for sprint races

Sorry! That was a dumb question without any context!

I'll be doing vintage sprint races, 20 minute sessions / 2 mile track. Three sessions per day in a race weekend. Dedicated race car, not driven to track. I'm a formula car racer, so I'm used to filling up after every session!

I got an ATL 10 gallon. Was thinking about trading for an 8 due to fitment issues, but it became a moot point, so I stayed with the 10.

Sorry for not providing the details! It always drives me a little (just a little) when I see questions like that, and I became THAT GUY for a minute, very embarrassing!

Thanks!

Very cool tank! Did you have that custom made to fit in the original space? What fuel pump setup did you use with the 44's?

I used a Bendix fuel pump. It has plenty of volume for the Webers. I had Fuelsafe make the tank to fit.
I run a -8 from the tank to the pump and a -6 from the pump to the carbs via a manifold.
The -6 line I run in the left side heater duct. I was a little uncomfortable running fuel lines in the tunnel.
