Full Version: Hoosier A6 Vs Kuhmo V710 your thoughts?

Since the track car will be for sale soon (watch the classifieds in the next month) I will need to get tires for my 70. The 70 was my AX weapon of choice until I got "the sickness" for a trackcar. When I last AX the 70 I ran with Kuhmo V710's and love them. My 70 is a stock body 914 with a 73 2.0L engine with a bunch of suspension mods. aktion035.gif

I ran Hoosiers on the track car (3.0L /6 monster) for AXing and they were great also. So trying to decied which to use on the 70. Anyone ever have both types before? Is the Hoosier worth the $24 per tire more than Kuhmos?

Thanks

I think the Hoosiers are faster, but they will not last as many runs as the 710's.

A6's corded after 66 runs...

At about $800 a set, that's about $12 a minute or $727 an hour ohmy.gif

Hoosiers,.......... if you care.
Trekkor
Yep, if I was running a season with the overall win in mind, I'd run Hoosiers.
Replace them after 30 minutes, too!! ( If I wanted to really go for it )

A6 hands down is best AX tire.
Evan Fullerton
My observations.

Hoosiers A6 compared to 710s

A6 has stiffer sidewall, better transitional response, slightly better lateral grip, heats up faster and overheats sooner, likes smaller slip angles and has a more defined grip slide line.

710 puts down power better in a strait line, softer side wall, is slightly wider, marginally heavier, likes larger slip angles and has a less defined grip slide line. Feel almost mushy compared to Hoosier.

IMO if you have a car with a ton of power and struggles to put it down, then the 710 may be better but in all other cases, I prefer the A6. If price is a factor the 710s are a better deal but it is hard to put a price on the crisp, defined, in control feel of the A6.

Third rate tire compared to what has been discussed here.

I'm thinkin' on getting some decent AX tiars for Mr.2. I figure there is no sense spending a pee pot fulla money burning new tiars while I'm learning how to drive the sumbitch. Tire sizes for the car are hard to come by......205& 225 X15......none of the new high tech street tires are available for both sizes. SO.....I'm thinkin' Victorracers. They wear good, grip good and are decent in the wet.
They'll give me an idea where we stand in C Stock after 5-6 AXs. If I can get close, then maybe Hoosiers can get me over the hump.....if not, it ain't worth the extra costs.

Has anybody AX'd on R6's?? I like the feel of the Hoosiers and was thinking of running R6's to get something that would last a while...like running Victorocks.
J P Stein
I ran R3SO4s years back. They were about as good as the Vracers,IIRC, but it was hard to tell exactly as they were bigger than the Vracers in front (225s at both ends) & I had made some changes to the car. I never got em' too hot/slippery.

JP, I'd suggest looking at the Toyo RA-1s as well as the victoracers. We've run the V700 victoracers on the blue car and weren't very impressed. They were at least several seconds off pace.

The toyos however seem to last damn near forever and grip about as well. They work pretty well on my Street/Occasional AX 914:

I think Trekkor was running R6's at an AX once and I mounted them on my car. If I recall they felt similar to my BFG R1's

None in my size for the rear.......there in lies the rub. I get V racers, 710s R or A 6s....or mix & match.

Yoko A048 in soft M compound looks interesting. Compound designed for cool weather and short track

Yeah, I looked at those, but for about the same cost as Hoosiers ...tho they'd last longer.

Don't forget about the R888s if you are considering RA1s.

Have you tried them? The reason I ask is that on the SCCA forums people say they have performance compared to an A6 with longevity of a V710.
Justinp71
I just bought a set of NT01's. I've heard good things about them, I wanted something I felt more comfortable to drive to the track on, plus I got them cheap through the price matching of americas tire to onlinetires.com.

The only complaint thus far is they are an inside/outside tire, so later on when my front end camber wears down the inside of the tires I wont be able to flip them over.

I'll be running them on the march 21st SVR AX, so we'll see how good they are...

I was very happy with my old A032 Soft compounds. They wore like stones and had great grip and I droive them on the street all the time with no issues. You would get tons more wear than Hoosiers.

Do they make those in 225/50/15's?

Between my Dad and I we are on at least our 7th set of NT-01s. They can be flipped on the rim and run with out any problems. Every single set we have had has been flipped at some point (some twice), the toyo/nitto reps say that it is fine to do as well. They make a nice progressive practice tire but are susceptible to overheating the surface if you get a little over exuberant with right pedal on a run and need to be watered down before the next lap. Figure 2-4 seconds off the pace of a new A6 on a 70 sec course.

Dang where do you have 70 second AX courses? Or are you just slow? happy11.gif
Evan Fullerton
Have you seen El Toro? It is massive 18,450 acres smlove2.gif . There have been times where PCA has had a 1.2 mile AX course, Jaguar had an arrive and drive track set up, there was a drift event going on, and we were only using 1/2 of the available space.

Likely only to maximize water evacuation potential.

I have not yet seen a tire that is truly directional.

I've run:
Falkens ( 215 and 615 ), Yokohamas, 710's, Hoosiers, Goodyears and Toyo RA1's- All 'backwards'.

I've run through 8 sets of v710's in the past year and have been happy with them. They recently increased the prices and I considered trying some other options. The Hoosier R6 is available in 205/50/15 as a spec miata tire called the SM6 that are only $164, $24 cheaper than v710's at tirerack. Unfortunately I was told that they rub too much on a narrow body car, so I canceled my order. I just took delivery of some bfg r1's that I haven't tried before, got them for $154 each and free shipping.

For street and AX I just got the Bridgestone Re-11, did awesome at the first AX in damp and then drying conditions.
