Maintenance and mod time.
Got rid of the carpet.
Got all of the floor tar out today ( finally

) 15#'s
It took about an hour with my air chisel.
I also pulled out the back pad and razor scraped the adhesive on the firewall.
I'm not sure how I want to finish the floor and firewall.

The front rotors are off.
I need new ones as well as new brake pads.
The next big step is going to be the install of fiberglass GT flares.
I'm still waffling.
I want to replace the front windshield and I am thinking about taking out the side door glass. Maybe go back with Lexan? ( sources? )
I have a track date on Sept 11th I really want to make and then the 14th at Laguna.
We'll see if it happens.

Nice. Keep on it and it will get done in time. Maybe not all of it but start with the stuff that makes it a runner. Then..

Trek, there's a TAP plastics near me, you should be able to find material for windows.
I have a 914 front windscreen template if you want to go to Lexan and save a bunch of weight.

I just talked with Tap Plastics.
Materials will be around $250 (Lexan with scratch resistant coating) and Labor around $50 to cut the screen using my template.
I have no idea whether the material price is good or bad, labor price seems fine. Not sure either about the SR coating, forgot to ask what the price was without.
If you go for it, I will probably have one made along side yours for my car.
If you gut the doors and go with the lexan windscreen I bet you'd save 100 pounds!

OK, I started thinking (I know, dangerous) and the Tap Plastics price of $250 for lexan seemed outrageous.
I called around, and I've found regular Lexan sheets 30" by 60" for about $75 in either 3/16" or 1/4", and the outfit can cut these for a labor charge (TAP quoted me about $50 labor so I would think price would be similar).
It would be no problem to have any number of these made with my template.
My template has holes, but they can be omitted if you want to drill your own.
Next I'm going to research Tear-Off material.

I wonder if the placement/fitment and fastner/welding spots would allow a quick install of fiberglass flares with pop rivets to later be covered easily with welded steel flares?
I think removing the windows on the door is a no-brainer. Go for it

It would not be an issue.
Most people 'butt-weld' the steel flares.
The rivet holes would be cut away, as they are inside the 'footprint' of the flares.

Remember the side windows have a curve in the glass, so the lexan might not fit well? Why not just pull the doors and replace with racing fiberglass like I did with the race car. Be sure to pull the hinges, knock out the pin and drill the steel for lightness. If you drill the pin holes slightly you can use a ball-pin as a replacement and put the stock doors on in case of rain.......

if purchasing a lexan front... I'd suggest reading the rule books to obtain the correct thickness
for track days obviously this is not mandatory...
but what if you decide to race some day.. or even to sell to someone who may race
no reason to not use the correct legal thickness from the start.

Personally I would avoid a lexan windshield, but that's just me. You can find lightness elsewhere in the car including the other windows (or just remove them), doors, lids and trim stuff.

Last I knew SCCA required 1/4" thick for windshields and 1/8" for side and rear windows. I used a 3/16" windshield at one time on my 914 and found that it bowed inward above 120 mph. I had NASCAR style windshield supports inside the car to help with that, but I quickly learned the wisdom of SCCA's 1/4" requirement.
I recall weighing my 3/16" windshield and comparing it to a stock one. I think my 3/16" Lexan one was about 9 lbs and stock was 20-25 lbs. Based on that I guess you'd expect a 1/4" one to be about 12 lbs, about 1/2 the weight of stock.

If you're thinking of replacing the side door glass with Lexan, it may not buy you that much weight savings. I remember being surprised when I gutted a 914 door a bunch of years ago, that out of a 70 lb stock door, the glass was only like 5-7 lbs or something like that. There's a lot more weight in the window lift mechanism, all the bracing, etc. I think my gutted door (just the outer skin) wound up being like 15 lbs.

Check out some of the spec 911's. They have a thin aluminum door panel that covers the inside of the door AND the top of the door, covering the slot where the glass would have come out. It looks light weight and pretty clean. I know 914 door panels weigh about 3 lbs each....
Forget about a Lexan windshield.........
How do I look at the 09 LeMons thread??

I used some thin black ABS (plastic) to cover the doors and then L shaped aluminum over the window channel. Cheap and light. Looks decent - maybe not as sexy as all aluminum but probably doesn't get as hot on toasty SoCal days either.
