This is a damn near perfect car. Flawless EXCEPT the friggin inside control arm ear.. I hate seeing this. He was sold the car.. he had the car serviced elsewhere..(they didnt see it).. the previous owner may or may not have known about it... but it sucks to be the new owner and find it later. PLEASE. Check this area before buying a car. It is not real easy to see with the engine in the car... but you can see it if you know where to look.

The car will feel "squirrely" when you drive it. It will feel like it needs tires...

I agree it will feel squirrelly. I found out the hard way, no fun. (IMG:http://www.914club.com/bbs2/style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

Well, mine wasn't cracked but obviously was repaired sometime in the past.

How's this for an ear?

I've ordered the engine shelf and the ear from Restoration-Design and will be requesting assistance in the near future, ie, this weekend.

WOW, that looks like crap. I wonder how they determined the correct location of the pivot to keep the geometry right? (IMG:http://www.914club.com/bbs2/style_emoticons/default/icon8.gif)

um.. I measure both sides. The new one fits almost exactly where the old one came off.

The only geometry affected is toe.

In the pic above... it is 545mm's from the center of the ear to the middle of the dimple in the base of the firewall.

Hi,
Mine was the same way only not quite so bad. It was cracked on the inside only. Had a guy come to the house and weld in a new piece. Did a good job. I didn't see this problem till I got under and looked around before I started rebuilding suspension. I was lucky. Ya gotta crawl under there and LOOK.
Cheers, Elliot

Did he replace the ear ?? Or patch over it ?? Had you seen the rust that came out of this one... you would have replaced yours.. it will continue to rust from the inside out..

Oh.. FYI:

NO paint behind the old ear.. just bare metal. I shot the primer on it to give it something... I also shot primer inside the new ear prior to install.

Hey B, I noticed that you were able to replace the ear without cutting out the engine shelf, very cool.

This is what I got today:
