Finally installed the under-dash heater and AC this summer. Finished it during a crazy hot week here in Fresno, CA where the temps reached 108!! It worked better than the AC in my suv. Very cold didn't even phase the power of the Subi motor when it would click on.
We used an under-dash unit from Renegade Hybrids. New AC compressor, condensor and dryer were added, along with AC and heating hoses. A little flip of a lever under the front trunk and hot water is allowed (or stopped) from the heater core. System works better than the original by far.

Video

I still had my second Austin Healey Sprite when I bought the 914. It had become my wife's daily driver when we left college and got jobs in Miami. Of course we needed two cars unless I was going to commute from our apartment in Miami Shores to downtown every day on my Suzuki X6. WHile that was fun when it was not raining, there was almost zero chance of that occurring, particularly in the afternoon going home. So we needed a practical "family car," and I decided to "grow up" and we got...a Datsun station wagon.

The X6, BTW, for those unfamiliar with it, was the most awesome 250 street bike I know of. Up to 60 it would outrun bikes of three or four times the displacement, and there were only a handful of pretty exotic street cars that could stay with it...models you only saw in Road and track and not running around South Florida back then. 30 came up as fast as you could shift and there was no way I could keep my butt from sliding almost off the back of the seat under full acceleration. So at that point in my life I looked at the bike for sheer performance, the Sprite for handling fun, and the wagon for...I don't know, probably my mother's concept of "maturity."

The Datsun was absolutely the worst car I have ever owned. The vaunted Japanese quality control on this example was nonexistent. Every external trim screw had rusted within six months, the light yellow paint was faded, it was on its third warranty-replaced differential...just a nightmare. So much so that in the second six months I owned it I started looking for a replacement, and this time the hell with practicality, I wanted something I could actually enjoy!

The 240Z and 914 came out at roughly the same time. While the 240 was very tempting, with a lot more power and good looks as well as the promise of excellent handling, given my experience with the 510 there was just no way I would consider another Datsun.

Besides, the 914 had those seven magic letter on the hood..."P-O-R-S-C-H-E." It was a dream come true. A targa top, mid engine, two trunks, great gas mileage...all for under $4000? How could I resist, even though the Daatsun had lost so much value I actually had to pay to trade it in relative to the remaining balance on the loan. But without batting an eye I put my name on the waiting list for a blue car with a tan interior and no appearance group. Would have loved to have that but couldn't afford the extra $200.

The dealers were unable to get the white version with the black interior and appearance group as shown on the original brochure I still have...which I kept tacked to my cubicle wall while waiting. So naturally, when my name came to the top of the list I was told I could have any color I wanted as long as it was white with the appearance group. Thankfully none of the three cars that came in had radios...as it was I had to borrow the extra money for the appearance group from a friend. My only choice between the three cars was tires..I opted for Michelins.

Of course I bought a car cover for it...I had no garage and Florida sun is brutal on interiors and paint. And naturally I got one that had "Porsche" stenciled on it. So when I parked and covered it in the lot at work, my boss dubbed it..."The Five Speed Brown Bag."

Auto Car Loan Financing Online - Steps to Secure an Auto Loan for First Time Car Buyers

http://www.914club.com/bbs2/index.php?automodule=blog&blogid=640&showentry=2339

Are you planning to buy a car for yourself? Is it the first time that you are thinking of buying a car? Are you confused as where to look for financing? Are you finding it difficult because you have no credit scores? Then first time buyer auto loan is the answer to all your questions.

Generally college students and newly graduates fall in the category of first time buyers. It is difficult for a college student to get the desired auto loan because they have no credit history. Yet each and every one of them desires to own a car of their choice. However, they find it difficult to get the finance to realize their dreams.

Moreover, since they are studying they might not have a high income or even a stable source of income. But they need not be disappointed. They can apply for the first time auto loan. These are not very difficult to get. Some of the initiatives you can take to help yourself are below:

Lenders: Start looking for lenders who are willing to provide you with a loan. It can be banks, financial institutions, credit unions, online lenders and even auto manufacturers and dealers. Most lenders are ready to offer a first time buyer auto loan.

Interest rates: Since the applicants have no credit scores to their aid, it is difficult to ascertain repaying capacity. Hence, such applicants may be considered risky in comparison to others. To protect themselves from the risk, the lenders may hike up the rates of interest. So the applicant should be willing to pay more.

Offers: It is best to look for the information in advertisements, offers, promotional offers, etc. Sometimes the manufacturers come up with special offers for first time buyers. If you apply to such loan and it gets approved, you may get the advantage of offers like free car insurance among others. Many times the interest rates offered in such offers are at discounted rates making it attractive to apply.

Down payment: If you have saved some money and it is not utilized, use it to pay down payment for the car. The higher you pay in down payment, the lower the rates of interests are. The lenders consider that if you are paying higher money down, then you will be eager to pay your monthly payments in time too.

Security: When the applicant can provide with additional security to back up their loan in the form of collateral, the lenders are more than willing to talk. They will also lower the rates of interests. In case you do not have collateral to put as security, having a co-signer with stable source of income will also do the trick. Another way will be if you are working alongside with your studies, they you can get a proof of income and a reference from your employer to support your auto loan application.

Nevertheless, sharpen your negotiation skills. Look forward to bargain to bring down the rate of interest for your application.

Hey guys,
Great to be here. I truly love all Porsches but I have a mystery on my hand. I have been around cars, my entire life and very little suprises me. We own two Porsches and just bought this little 914.
I bought this car sight unseen and glad I did because its a mystery. Let me tell you what I know. This car came from OK and was sold a site called Copart. Copart does a lot of salvage and govt seized items. The car was put up by a dealer and was not a salvage title. It was purchased at a dealer of govt exports in FL and I tracked it there. I got the guy to sell it to me at a profit and I sent a driver to bring it to me in the GA MNTS. I got it non running and was expecting a complete rebuild but WHOA....
THIS CAR WAS ALMOST PERFECT
LEt me explain, The guy in OK said miles exempt but stated that the 44k on the odometer was true and correct. No biggie, here in GA anything over 15 years is exempt. I have rebuilt and done restos on several old cars(72 Chevelle and 65 mustang GT were my last). This car has everything in absolute original condition and its almost a good 7/10 car now. The enterior is all original with NO tears or rips. The odometer shows 44k. IT has NO overspray on it and the id plates look like they were stamped yesterday and they are all present. IT is a 1970 914-4. It has a build date of DEC 1969 and shows a build code of being the 1601 car built. It is set up for US sale and Chasis numbers show this matches. The Karmen Number shows it made in DEC on a WED. The targa is all original and has a engraved crest on it from Porshe that says LARRY COTTRILL. I have all the codes and numbers from the car. It is not running but the engine needs to be refreshed and gas tank cleaned. It is signal orange and everything is there and absolutley ZERO rust on the car and NO BONDO. ANy clues here, Could this really be one of the first imported 914s from California. For what I paid for it, I couldn't have changed the tires and rims on my 911 so I am thrilled with this little mystery. ANy ideas, I am waiting with baited breath.
